The Shinano River flows through Ojiya, which spans 155 square kilometers with a population density of 224 persons per square kilometer.

Established in 1889, Ojiya transformed from a district to an independent city in 1954, marking a significant change in its administrative status.

Ojiya maintains the heritage of nishikigoi cultivation, with local specialists developing methods for breeding these ornamental carp varieties for over 200 years.

The city connects to major regions through the JR East Iiyama Line, Joetsu Line, and Kan-Etsu Expressway, facilitating transportation across Niigata Prefecture.

Nishikigoi no Sato exhibition center displays 200 specimens of colored carp across 15 varieties, representing the city's dedication to ornamental fish breeding.
