Ojiya Nishikigoi no Sato, Public aquarium in Jōnai, Japan
Ojiya Nishikigoi no Sato is a public aquarium in Jōnai that displays around 200 specimens from 15 varieties of ornamental carp in clear water tanks. The facility is surrounded by a Japanese garden with bridges and waterfalls that create a natural setting for the fish.
The facility opened in October 1989 and stands in a region where black edible carp were transformed into colored ornamental variants during the early 1800s. This transformation marked the beginning of a breeding art that has shaped local history.
The exhibition shows how important Nishikigoi breeding is to the people in this region. These techniques are passed down through generations and continue to shape the craft of local breeders.
The location is about 5 minutes from the Ojiya Interchange and easy to reach by car. There are 70 parking spaces on site and opening hours from 9:00 to 18:00 every day.
The aquarium houses the only permanent exhibition of live Nishikigoi specimens worldwide. It also includes an extensive collection of historical documents that show how these fish developed over the centuries.
