Echigo Hillside Park, National government park in Nagaoka, Japan.
Echigo Hillside Park is an expansive recreational area in Nagaoka with diverse play and activity options for visitors of all ages. The grounds feature green lawns, mountain-shaped trampolines, water playgrounds, pedal-powered vehicles, and several viewing points distributed across different zones.
The site opened on July 30, 1998, as part of a national initiative by Japan to create large recreational spaces in Niigata Prefecture. This establishment reflected efforts to develop modern public leisure areas across the region.
The park shapes community life through eight annual festivals that celebrate seasonal blooms like tulips, roses, and cosmos throughout the year. Visitors also experience traditional Japanese winter celebrations with snow activities integrated into the outdoor space.
The park is accessible by bus in about 36 minutes from Nagaoka Station or by car in about 10 minutes from Nagaoka IC on the expressway. The grounds are walkable on foot, though comfortable shoes are recommended since different areas are spread across the entire site.
The grounds transform in winter into a sledding area with a 150-meter slope where young and old can slide down the hill. It also becomes a cross-country skiing zone with specialized snow playgrounds for visitors of all ages.
