Chosei Bridge, Steel truss bridge in Nagaoka, Japan.
Chosei Bridge is a steel truss crossing that spans 850 meters over the Shinano River, with 13 sections connected by a Gerber truss structure designed to handle shifting water conditions. A separate pedestrian pathway runs alongside the roadway, allowing walkers to view the river and surrounding landscape as they cross.
The bridge was completed in 1937 as the third structure at this crossing site, following earlier wooden versions destroyed by Shinano River floods. Engineers selected the steel truss design specifically to withstand the recurring water dangers that threatened the area.
The bridge becomes the focal point during the Nagaoka Matsuri Festival in August, when fireworks light up the sky and crowds gather to watch from below and alongside. This seasonal celebration has made the structure central to how residents experience their city's main festival.
The bridge sits three minutes by bus from JR Nagaoka Station and links the eastern and western sides of the city across the river. Visitors should expect windy conditions and take care when walking, as the open design offers little shelter from weather on the water.
The structure retains its original engineering from the Showa period and holds recognition from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers as heritage infrastructure. This designation means the bridge undergoes careful maintenance to preserve its authentic construction methods and design details for the future.
