Aoshi Shrine, Shinto shrine in Yukyuzan Park, Nagaoka, Japan.

Aoshi Shrine is a wooden Shinto shrine set among cherry trees in Yukyuzan Park, featuring traditional architectural details and ornate decorative work. The structure displays classic design elements typical of the period when it was built, with its wooden framework and crafted details still intact.

Makino Tadakazu founded this shrine in 1722 as a spiritual place for the local community. It was later recognized as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, protecting its historical significance.

Every November, families gather here for Shichi-Go-San ceremonies, where they pray for the health and growth of children aged three, five, and seven. These gatherings show how the shrine remains central to local family traditions.

The shrine is located within Yukyuzan Park and is easily reached from Nagaoka city, with regular bus service from the train station bringing visitors to the area. The park setting allows for comfortable exploration and is accessible throughout the year.

Next to the shrine stands a small separate shrine honoring Shiro, a dog who traveled about 250 kilometers to reunite with his family. This local memorial reveals how deeply animals are valued in Japanese spiritual traditions.
