Sumiyoshi-ku, Administrative ward in southern Osaka, Japan

The ward extends along the southern part of the Uemachi Plateau, bordered by the Yamato River that separates it from neighboring Sakai City.

The region functioned as Japan's primary international port until the construction of Naniwa no Tsu, serving as the departure point for envoys to Chinese dynasties.

The Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine, established in 211, contains four main buildings constructed in the distinctive Sumiyoshi architectural style dating from 1810.

Six rail lines and three main roads, including Abiko-Suji and Abeno-Suji, connect the ward's 157,000 residents to central Osaka and surrounding areas.

The Tezukayama district contains upper-class residential areas, while neighborhoods near Sumiyoshi Shrine house many traditional family residences.
