Baekdu Hagwon, Korean international school in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, Japan
Baekdu Hagwon is a Korean international school in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, serving students from kindergarten through high school. The school integrates Japanese textbooks with Korean cultural instruction and offers specialized language courses in Japanese, Korean, and English.
The school was founded in March 1946 when the Baekdu Association established two institutions serving the Korean community in Osaka. Over the following decades, these schools merged and expanded to become the integrated education center that exists today.
Korean language and history classes let students connect with their heritage while learning about their ancestors. At the same time, they study Japanese and English, helping them navigate life in both cultures.
The school operates with small class sizes of about 15 to 20 students per instructor, allowing for personal attention to each learner. The campus is located in a residential neighborhood, and visiting during school hours gives you the best sense of daily life there.
In 2021, the school implemented menstrual leave for high school girls, a forward-thinking policy rarely seen in Japan. This made it one of the first educational institutions in the country to officially recognize student wellness in this way.
