Sumiyoshi Park, Urban park in Hamaguchi-higashi, Osaka, Japan.
Sumiyoshi Park is an eight-hectare urban green space in Hamaguchi-higashi that contains flower beds, sports courts, playgrounds, and exercise equipment spread across multiple landscaped zones. The layout allows visitors to find different activities in each section of the grounds.
The park was founded in 1873 on the former grounds of Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine and ranks among the earliest public recreational spaces in Osaka Prefecture. Its creation occurred during a period when cities across Japan began opening green spaces to the public.
The central pathway called Shiokake-michi serves as the traditional approach to the nearby Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine. Visitors walk the same route that pilgrims have followed for many centuries.
The location is easy to reach from Sumiyoshi Taisha Station on the Nankai Main Line and offers free entry throughout the year. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the grounds are designed for walking and exploring various sections.
The grounds contain a restored stone lantern from the Kamakura period that is regarded as Japan's oldest lighthouse structure. This object is used as an exhibition space twice each month to display historical pieces.
