Sumiyoshi Park, Urban park in Hamaguchi-higashi, Osaka, Japan.
Sumiyoshi Park is an urban park in the Hamaguchi-higashi neighborhood of Osaka, Japan, with flower beds, sports courts, playgrounds, and outdoor exercise equipment arranged across several zones. A central path runs through the grounds and connects each of these areas.
The park was established in 1873 on land that had previously belonged to the Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine, making it one of the first public green spaces in Osaka Prefecture. It was created during a period when many Japanese cities began opening similar spaces to the public.
The central path through the park, known as Shiokake-michi, was the traditional approach route to the nearby Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine. Visitors walking it today pass old stone lanterns and steps that were part of the original pilgrimage route.
The park is easy to reach from Sumiyoshi Taisha Station on the Nankai Main Line, and entry is free all year round. Comfortable shoes are a good idea since the grounds are made for walking and moving between sections.
The park holds a stone lantern from the Kamakura period that is considered Japan's oldest lighthouse structure. Twice a month, this object serves as a small exhibition space to display historical items.
