Taisho University, Private university in Toshima, Japan
This institution sits in the Nishi-sugamo neighborhood and spreads across several contemporary buildings housing lecture halls, libraries, and research centers. The campus combines functional teaching spaces with facilities dedicated to religious studies and scholarly work.
The founding took place in 1926 when three Buddhist colleges from the 1880s merged: Tendai-shu College, Buzan College, and Religious College. This union brought together different religious teaching traditions under a single academic roof.
The Buddhist foundation appears in daily campus life, where students gather for meditation sessions or attend lectures on religious texts and temple traditions. Many spaces are designed to support quiet study of spiritual topics and contemplative practice.
The nearest station is Nishi-sugamo, just a short walk from the main gate. Visitors coming from other stations can also use Shin-Koshinzuka or Koshinzuka, both within walking distance.
The institution runs a one-year preparatory program for international students that helps them get ready for regular study in Japan. About 40 participants go through this program each year before enrolling at Japanese higher education institutions.
