Komatsu Airport, Joint-use airport in Komatsu, Japan
Komatsu Airport is a joint-use airport in the city of Komatsu on Honshu Island and features a shared runway for civilian and military flights. The terminal sits at roughly 7 meters elevation and offers connections to cities such as Tokyo, Sapporo and Fukuoka.
The airport opened in 1944 during World War II as a military base and later welcomed civilian flights. The runway was extended to 2700 meters in 1964 to accommodate larger jet aircraft.
The airport sits near traditional craft villages in Ishikawa Prefecture, where travelers often pass through on their way to Kanazawa or the Noto Peninsula. The terminals display subtle nods to local lacquerware and ceramics as a regional welcome gesture.
The terminals sit compact together, so travelers move quickly between check-in and gates. Regional rail and bus links reach Kanazawa in about 40 minutes, making onward travel into the city straightforward.
The facility shares its runway with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, which occasionally makes military jets visible alongside scheduled passenger planes. Observers at the terminal can sometimes see fighter aircraft taking off or landing.
