Kibagata Park, Waterfront park in Komatsu, Japan.
Kibagata Park is a waterfront park in Komatsu, Japan, built around a natural lagoon divided into four connected sections. Paths wind through reed beds and wetland areas, linking each section and allowing visitors to cross the full length of the park on foot.
The park opened in 1982 when the natural lagoon and its surrounding wetlands were turned into a public space. The lagoon was kept in its original shape, which is why the water still looks the same as it did before the park existed.
The park takes its name from the Kibagata lagoon at its center, and the word 'gata' simply means lagoon in Japanese. Watching waterbirds settle on the water is a common pastime here, especially in the cooler months when migratory species arrive.
The South section is a good starting point since it offers boat rentals and easy access to the lagoon. From there, well-marked paths lead through the other sections and make it easy to navigate the whole park without getting lost.
The park has fenced areas specifically for dogs, split by size so that small and large dogs use separate spaces. Each area has water stations and shaded rest spots, which is a rare feature for a public park in Japan.
