Ikata, Peninsula town in Nishiuwa district, Japan

The town of Ikata extends across 93.98 square kilometers along the Sadamisaki Peninsula, featuring mountainous terrain and coastal areas at the westernmost point of Shikoku Island.

The region contains archaeological evidence of continuous human settlements dating from the Jomon period through the Yayoi period, with formal town establishment occurring in 1955.

Local fishermen maintain traditional fishing methods in the surrounding waters while farmers cultivate mikan oranges on the terraced hillsides throughout the peninsula.

Visitors can reach Ikata via Highway 56 connecting to Highway 197 or Route 378 from Matsuyama, with the nearest train station located twenty minutes away in Yawatahama.

The Sadamisaki Peninsula where Ikata sits holds the distinction of being the narrowest peninsula in Japan, offering views of both the inland sea and Kyushu.
