Shinkamigoto

Shinkamigoto is an island municipality in Minamimatsuura district comprising several islands including Nakadori and Wakamatsu, connected by the Wakamatsu Great Bridge. The archipelago spans across the emerald waters of the East China Sea with a diverse coastal landscape.

Shinkamigoto was established in 2004 through the merger of five towns: Arikawa, Kamigoto, Narao, Shin-Uonome, and Wakamatsu. This fusion created the sole municipality in Minamimatsuura district.

The town holds 29 churches, including Kashiragashima Church built from local sandstone, reflecting the deep Christian tradition in this region of Japan. Visitors can explore these religious structures and understand the spiritual significance that Christianity holds for island residents.

Daily ferry and high-speed boat services connect the town to Nagasaki, Sasebo, Fukuoka, and Goto, making it accessible throughout the year. Travel arrangements are relatively flexible for different visitor schedules.

The Akadaki Cliffs on Nakadori Island rise about 143 m (470 ft) above sea level and display red volcanic rock formations shaped by centuries of marine erosion. This geological formation represents a rare example of the powerful natural forces that have shaped the island landscapes.
