Atsuma, Rural municipality in Yufutsu district, Japan

Atsuma is a town in Yufutsu district on Hokkaido island and is divided by a river that separates the built area from surrounding woodlands. The town sits on a railway line and is accessible via an expressway and a national highway.

The settlement began as a village in April 1906 and gained town status in 1965. The region shows archaeological traces of historic trade connections and human presence throughout the 20th century.

The Inaka Matsuri Festival takes place each July with traditional dances performed in the streets by local groups. Rehearsals happen in the weeks before, bringing community members together to prepare for the celebration.

Visitors can walk around on foot or join guided tours through different areas of the town. Hiking paths wind through the surroundings and offer opportunities to explore the natural landscape.

Multiple planting events between 2015 and 2017 created a green corridor that noticeably changed the local landscape. This transformation through volunteer effort is visible in how the region now looks.
