Kamisunagawa, town in Sorachi district, Hokkaido, Japan
Kamisunagawa is a small town in the Sorachi district of Sorachi Subprefecture, on the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan. The area is made up of flat land with gentle hills, farmland, simple houses, and narrow streets.
Kamisunagawa was officially established as a town in 1949, when several neighboring communities merged into one. Since then, it has grown gradually as a rural settlement centered on farming and local craftsmanship.
The name Kamisunagawa comes from a local river, pointing to the close ties between residents and the land around them. Locally grown shiitake mushrooms are a staple of the local table and appear regularly at community gatherings throughout the year.
The town is easy to get around on foot or by bicycle, as most points of interest are close together. Visitors coming from larger cities in the region will find it helpful to use public transport or a car to reach it.
Kamisunagawa is home to a space research facility that simulates low gravity conditions and is used in studies related to space missions. Since 1980, it has also maintained a sister city relationship with Sparwood in Canada, an unusual link between two small communities on different continents.
