Noheji, Coastal town in Kamikita district, Japan

Noheji is a coastal town in Kamikita district that extends along Mutsu Bay, with the Eboshidake mountain rising to the south. The landscape offers views across the Hakkoda mountain range and the surrounding waters from various vantage points.

The area came under the control of the Nanbu clan during the Edo period and became a strategic point for maritime trade between the Morioka and Hirosaki domains. This position shaped its economic growth and the connections between regional powers.

The annual Gion Festival is the largest celebration in this town and shows how deeply people here value their maritime past. The festivities reveal the close connection that locals maintain with the sea and their seafaring traditions.

The town is well connected by the Aoimori Railway Line and the Ominato Line, providing direct rail access to other parts of Aomori Prefecture. Visitors will find a reliable public transport network that makes getting around the region straightforward.

Local shipwrights reconstructed the Michinoku Maru vessel using traditional Japanese boat-building methods, which later appeared in the film Tatara Samurai. This project demonstrates how ancient craftsmanship continues to be practiced and adapted in modern times.
