Fukagawa Edo Museum, Local museum in Shirakawa, Japan.
Fukagawa Edo Museum is a local museum in Shirakawa featuring a complete reconstruction of a traditional Tokyo neighborhood from the late Edo period. The recreation includes authentic streets, houses, shops, and a canal that mirror the appearance and layout of the time.
The museum was established in 1981 and officially opened in 1986 to preserve the heritage of the Fukagawa district. It focuses on the Tempo period between 1830 and 1843, a significant era in the area's past.
The reconstructed buildings show how people lived in this area two centuries ago, and visitors can enter traditional Japanese homes by removing their shoes as was customary then. The rooms are filled with everyday objects that demonstrate how families and neighbors organized their daily routines.
The museum is three minutes from Kiyosumi-shirakawa Station and operates daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. You should wear comfortable shoes since much of the site is explored on foot, and be prepared to remove them when entering traditional homes.
The museum uses changing light and sound effects throughout the day to recreate different times of day and seasons in the historical neighborhood. This technique lets visitors experience how the area felt and looked at different moments.
