Reigan-ji

Reigan-ji, Buddhist temple in Shirakawa, Tokyo, Japan

Reigan-ji is a Buddhist temple in Shirakawa with meditation halls, traditional gardens, and a central hall for ceremonies and daily prayers. The grounds also include parking facilities and serve the local community with various religious services.

The temple was founded in 1624 by priest Reigan and joined the Kanto Juuhachi Danrin network, which linked Buddhist learning centers across eastern Japan. This early connection shaped its role as a religious and educational center in the region.

The temple serves as a gathering place where the neighborhood comes together for regular ceremonies and shares in traditional practices. These communal moments shape the rhythm of local life and create space for spiritual connection among residents.

The temple is located in Koto Ward and is easily accessible on foot, though parking spaces are available for vehicles. Visitors should check opening hours and wear appropriate clothing when entering the sacred spaces.

The temple grounds hold a copper seated Jizo Bosatsu statue designated as a cultural property, carefully preserved for visitors. The site also houses a nationally recognized historic tomb of Matsudaira Sadanobu.
