Shichirimi Beach

Shichirimi Beach stretches for 22 kilometers along the Pacific coast, featuring black stones polished smooth by ocean currents and waves. The wide shoreline offers a peaceful place to walk with views across open water.

During the medieval period, this coastline was known as Hamakaido, a pilgrimage route leading to the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano. The path served as a major spiritual journey for believers traveling from distant regions.

Local people gather colorful pebbles known as Mihama Koishi and transform them into jewelry and crafts. This practice has become an important part of the community's identity and local artistry.

The beach is within a short walk of Kumano City Station and accessible by car from nearby roads. Wear sturdy shoes when walking on the black pebbled surface, as the shore can be uneven.

Each summer, loggerhead sea turtles return to this shore to nest and lay eggs on the black pebbles. These seasonal visitors highlight the beach's role as a protected natural habitat.
