Kanō Castle

Kanō Castle is a fortified site set on high ground in the Gifu region, now visible as archaeological remains. The elevated position offers views across the surrounding valley and reveals the foundations of the original structures.

The castle was built in 1601 as an administrative center during the Edo period and served local feudal lords as their base of power. It gradually lost importance and declined into the ruins visible today.

The ruins reveal how feudal lords lived and displayed their control over the surrounding lands. Walking through the grounds, you can sense how important this place was to the community and how people moved through these spaces.

The site is freely accessible, though sturdy shoes are recommended due to uneven ground and slopes. An information center at the entrance provides orientation and context for exploring the different areas of the remains.

The site was strategically positioned to monitor the ancient trade routes passing through the region. This location made it a crucial control point for the movement of goods and people across long distances.
