Chiisagata District, Administrative district in Nagano Prefecture, Japan
Chiisagata District is an administrative area in Nagano Prefecture comprising two municipalities: the village of Aoki and the town of Nagawa. These two communities together make up the entire district in this mountainous region of central Japan.
The district was established in 1879 and initially contained many smaller administrative divisions within its boundaries. Through the following decades, successive municipal mergers gradually reduced these divisions into the two communities that exist today.
The district name translates to 小県郡 in Japanese characters, reflecting the traditional naming conventions used throughout the Nagano Prefecture administrative divisions.
The district sits in a mountainous region of Nagano Prefecture and is accessible by car or train from surrounding areas. Visitors should keep in mind that this is a rural area where most services and facilities are found in the nearby larger towns.
Through multiple municipal reorganizations, Chiisagata District underwent substantial changes, reducing from its initial 35 administrative divisions to just two current entities.
