New Chitose Airport, International airport in Chitose and Tomakomai, Japan.
New Chitose Airport is an international airport in Chitose and Tomakomai, Japan, handling both domestic and international flights at an elevation of 21 meters. The terminal building follows a semi-circular layout and includes passenger processing areas, shops and service facilities under a continuous roof.
Operations began in July 1988 as a replacement for the former Chitose Airport. Over the following decades, the facility grew to become the third largest passenger hub in Japan.
The name combines the city designation with a marker for the newer facility, replacing an earlier site. Visitors find craft displays and Hokkaido products throughout the terminal, along with seasonal showcases that reflect regional traditions at different times of the year.
The Rapid Airport Line connects the terminal to Sapporo Station with trains departing every 15 minutes and taking around half an hour. Multilingual signage guides passengers through the areas, and information desks are available for questions.
The facility shares airspace with Japan Air Self-Defense Force operations, requiring coordinated flight scheduling. Civilian and military takeoffs and landings alternate to prevent mutual interference.
