Kanayama Castle

Located at an elevation of 239 meters, the castle extends across multiple ridges with four distinct baileys connected by earthen walls and defensive ditches.

Built in 1469 by Iwamatsu Iezumi of the Nitta clan, the castle remained unconquered through multiple sieges until its peaceful surrender to Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590.

This fortification belongs to both the Seven Famous Castles of Kanto and the prestigious 100 Fine Castles of Japan historical preservation list.

The castle grounds cover 300 hectares, with a standard visiting route from the west bailey to the main enclosure requiring approximately three hours to complete.

The discovery of extensive stone foundations and walls at this site changed previous assumptions that medieval mountain castles in the Kanto region lacked substantial stonework.
