Rebun Airport, Regional airport on Rebun Island, Japan
Rebun Airport is a regional airport on Rebun Island in northern Hokkaido, Japan. The facility has an 800-meter runway at about 26 meters elevation and serves the remote island community.
The airport was developed to improve transportation connections for the island community and provide an alternative to ferry services. The island itself contains archaeological evidence from the Jomon period with early settlement traces.
The name Rebun comes from the Ainu language and means island in the open sea. Visitors can sense this cultural connection throughout the island community.
The airport is currently not in operation, so it is important to check current conditions before planning any visit. Ferry services from Wakkanai and neighboring Rishiri Island remain the available transportation options for reaching the island.
The airport sits near alpine flower fields protected within Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Rare plant species related to Edelweiss grow in this region and can only be found in a few areas of Japan.
