Rebun, Island municipality in Sōya Subprefecture, Japan
Rebun is an island municipality in Hokkaido and covers approximately 80 square kilometers with Mount Rebun rising 490 meters above sea level, surrounded by the Sea of Japan. The island has a rocky coastline with several harbors connected by ferry routes to the mainland and nearby islands.
The town was officially established in September 1956 and developed from earlier settlements of the indigenous Ainu people who built hilltop fortifications. The island had been inhabited for centuries by Ainu communities adapted to the harsh maritime environment.
The island maintains 300 species of alpine flowers, including the endemic Rebun lady's slipper orchid, recognized through the town mascot Atsumon.
Ferry services connect Rebun with mainland Wakkanai and nearby Rishiri Island for easy access. Bus routes operate between Kafuka port and Cape Sukoton in the north, linking the main locations on the island.
Paleontologists discovered fossilized remains of extinct long-finned pilot whales on the island, revealing the region's ancient marine history. These findings suggest whales once frequented these waters and were likely part of the local food sources for early inhabitants.
