Bakong, Temple in Cambodia
Bakong is a significant early mountain temple constructed during the Khmer Empire in Cambodia.
Founded by King Indravarman I in 881 AD, Bakong is considered to be the first temple mountain of sandstone constructed by rulers of the Khmer empire.
Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, Bakong showcases the Hindu cosmological elements that were prevalent in Khmer structures.
Located within the Roluos area, Bakong forms part of the greater Roluos group of temples, accessible for tourists and scholars alike.
Bakong stands as a prototype for later, more famous temple mountains at Angkor.
