South Hamgyong Province

South Hamgyong Province extends over 18,970 square kilometers along the eastern coast of North Korea, bordered by the Sea of Japan.

The province originated from the division of Hamgyong Province in 1896, marking a significant administrative transformation in Korean territorial management.

The Hamgyong dialect distinguishes this northeastern region, reflecting centuries of linguistic development separate from other Korean territories.

The province contains three major cities, Hamhung, Sinpo, and Tanchon, along with fifteen counties organized into smaller administrative units.

The Musudan-ri rocket launching facility within South Hamgyong Province represents a central element of North Korean military technology development.
