Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom

This archaeological site encompasses ruins of three ancient cities with fortifications, defensive walls, and royal burial chambers spread across mountainous terrain in northeast China. The excavations reveal both massive stone structures on the surface and carefully constructed underground spaces adorned with artistic details.

The ancient Koguryo Kingdom established these cities and tombs over several centuries, ruling territories across present-day China, North Korea, and parts of Russia. The site demonstrates how this kingdom organized its power and expressed its legacy through monumental construction.

The tombs display wall paintings showing dragons, tigers, and battle scenes that reveal how the Koguryo nobility viewed power and the afterlife. These images offer a window into what mattered most to the ruling classes of that time.
