Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom

The ancient fortress cities of Wunü Mountain, Gungnae, and Hwando contain stone structures and defensive walls spread across mountainous terrain in northeast China.

The Koguryo Kingdom established these cities between 37 BCE and 668 CE, ruling territories across present-day China, North Korea, and parts of Russia.

The tombs feature detailed wall paintings depicting dragons, tigers, and military scenes that represent the artistic techniques and beliefs of Koguryo nobility.

Visitors require approximately five hours to explore the main archaeological areas, with guided tours available from the entrance between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

The stone burial chambers demonstrate advanced engineering methods with elaborate ceiling structures that span large spaces without using support columns.
