Hwando

Hwando is an archaeological site in Jilin featuring city walls, fortifications, and tombs spread across a plateau near Wandu Mountain. The layout shows advanced engineering with thick defensive barriers and organized settlement patterns from the Koguryo Kingdom era.

The site served as a capital of the Koguryo Kingdom from the 1st century BC until the 7th century AD, when the kingdom declined. It was then abandoned and remained buried until modern excavations revealed its importance in East Asian history.

The tomb murals depict hunting scenes, banquets, and daily activities of Koguryo society. They reveal how ordinary people lived and what they valued during that time.

The site has information signs and guided tours available to explain the structures and artifacts. It helps to explore with a guide who can point out the different areas and explain what each section was used for.

Ongoing excavations continuously uncover new details about ancient urban design and defense systems. These discoveries reshape understanding of how sophisticated city civilizations functioned in East Asia.
