Hanyang University, Private research university in Seoul, South Korea
Hanyang University is a private research institution in Seoul. The main campus in the eastern part of the city includes lecture halls, engineering workshops and centers for applied sciences.
The institution began in 1939 as Dong-A Engineering Institute with technical training and became a full university in 1959 with an expanded range of subjects. Later, a second campus was established in Gyeonggi-do province.
The name combines Han for the historic Hangang River with Yang as an old Chinese term for the present-day city area. This choice reflects the aim of linking local identity with international exchange.
Most academic programs require Korean language skills, but English-taught degrees and summer courses are also available. The nearest subway stations are a short walk from the main buildings.
The sports center on campus was a competition venue for the 1988 Summer Olympic Games. To this day, students use the facilities for training and collegiate-level contests.
