Hongdo, Island in Sinan County, South Korea
Hongdo is a small island in the Yellow Sea, part of Sinan County in South Korea and within the Dadohaehaesang National Park. Red rocky cliffs ring most of its coastline, while the interior rises into forested hills with the highest peak, Gitdaebong, reaching close to 400 meters (1,300 feet).
Hongdo was declared a protected area in 1965 to preserve its natural state. It was later incorporated into the Dadohaehaesang National Park in 1981, which limited visitor access to marked trails and village zones.
Visitors reach the island by ferry from the port of Mokpo, with the crossing taking a few hours each way. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as most trails follow the cliffs and wind through the forested interior.
