Heuksando, Island in Sinan County, South Korea
Heuksando is a small island in the Yellow Sea, part of Sinan County in South Korea. It has a hilly terrain with steep peaks, rocky shores, small sandy beaches, and a few villages clustered around its harbor.
Heuksando has long served as a fishing and trading point in the Yellow Sea. Over time, small villages took root on the island, and some older traditions like local festivals and crafts are still alive today.
The name Heuksando means in Korean something like "island of the black mountain", referring to its dark rocky hills.
The island is reached by ferry from Mokpo, and the crossing can be rough depending on the weather. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since many of the paths run over rocky or hilly ground.
Hongeohoe, raw fermented skate fish, is a local dish you can try here with a freshly caught fish rather than an imported one. The taste is very sharp and unlike most other seafood dishes, making it something visitors remember long after the trip.
