Cheongamsa Temple, Buddhist temple site in Gimcheon, South Korea.
Cheongamsa Temple is a Buddhist temple site in Gimcheon nestled at the base of Mount Sudosan, with two main courtyards separated by a mountain stream that flows through the grounds. The complex also houses a Buddhist Women's College called Sungga-daehakgyo, which was founded in 1987 for training female monks.
The temple was founded in 859 by monk Doseon-guksa and experienced multiple destructions from fires that prompted reconstructions. Major restoration work took place in 1647 and 1782 to rebuild the damaged structures.
The main hall displays intricate Buddhist wall paintings and houses a central statue of Seokgamoni-bul alongside traditional religious items. These artistic works reflect the spiritual practices that have shaped this place over centuries.
The temple sits at the base of a mountain with natural pathways throughout the complex, organized by the flowing stream. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the different areas at a comfortable pace.
The temple is known for ancient inscriptions visible on rocks near the Ubicheon spring. According to historical records, this spring held special geomantic significance in the site's understanding and use.
