Ekibastuz, Industrial city in Pavlodar Region, Kazakhstan
Ekibastuz is an industrial city in Pavlodar Region, northeastern Kazakhstan, built around large coal reserves and power plants. The city sits 347 meters (about 1140 feet) above sea level and spreads across a wide plain marked by residential blocks and industrial facilities.
The settlement began in 1898 when Kosym Pshembayev discovered coal deposits, launching mining activity in the area. During the 20th century, the site grew into an industrial city with large power stations now supplying the surrounding region.
The name comes from Kazakh and means "two heads" or "two peaks," referring to nearby hills. Residents today use parks and public squares for gatherings, while local markets offer food and everyday goods.
The city lies along main roads that provide access to residential neighborhoods and industrial zones, while public transport connects different parts. Visitors should bring warm clothes in winter and light clothes in summer, as continental climate brings large temperature swings.
The chimneys of GRES-2 power station rank among the tallest freestanding structures in Central Asia and are visible from great distances. The nearby Vostochny open-pit mine is one of the largest coal mines in the world, covering dozens of kilometers.
