Мост через Кигач по трассе А-340, pont situé entre la Russie et le Kazakhstan
The Kigach bridge on highway A-340 is an international road bridge connecting Russia and Kazakhstan across the Kigach River, an arm of the Volga delta. The structure features three metal spans supported by metal piers and spans approximately 370 meters in total length, accommodating both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Construction began in 2006 following an agreement between Russia and Kazakhstan to establish a permanent border crossing. The bridge opened in October 2007, replacing nearly four decades of ferry operations as the primary transit route between the two nations.
The bridge accommodates daily vehicle traffic with a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour and spans a river channel that reaches approximately 280 meters wide during flood season. It forms part of a larger infrastructure system that includes customs and border processing facilities before and after crossing.
The bridge replaced a four-decade-old ferry operation and can transport up to five thousand vehicles daily, whereas the former ferry could manage only about four hundred trucks per day. This dramatic increase in capacity significantly transformed commerce and mobility in this border region.
