Qonayev, Administrative center in Almaty Region, Kazakhstan
Qonayev is an administrative center in Almaty Region, Kazakhstan, that extends along the shore of Qapshaghai Reservoir. The town lies roughly 76 kilometers north of Almaty and features wide streets and residential blocks oriented toward the waterfront.
The settlement emerged between 1970 and 1980 as a residential community for engineers and workers building Qapshaghai hydropower plant. After Kazakhstan gained independence, the settlement grew into a regional capital and received its current name in 2022.
The name honors Dinmukhamed Qonayev, a Kazakh statesman who shaped the region for decades. Visitors today experience a town where multiple generations gather by the lake and use the waterfront promenade for evening walks.
The reservoir offers beach zones and leisure areas that attract families from Almaty, especially on summer weekends. The waterfront roads are easy to explore on foot or by bicycle and lead to parking areas by the water.
The town has carried its new name for only a few years and many signs still show the former designation. The change marks a larger step in regional administrative reform that restructured Almaty Region.
