Arasan, Public bathhouse in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Arasan is a public bathhouse in Almaty, Kazakhstan, built with marble surfaces, pine wood details, and mosaic tiles across its large interior. It brings together a Russian banya, a Finnish sauna, and a Turkish hammam under one roof, with separate wings for men and women.
The building was planned in the late 1970s and opened in 1982 to meet the growing demand for bathing facilities in the city. Its design reflects the Soviet approach of combining function with decorative detail, using local materials alongside imported finishes.
The complex maintains separate sections for men and women, where visitors can experience Russian banya, Finnish sauna, Turkish hammam, and use a circular pool for cooling between sessions.
The bathhouse opens early in the morning and stays open until late evening, so a visit fits easily into most schedules. Towels and robes can be rented on site, but bringing your own swimwear is a good idea.
In the Russian banya section, visitors can ask for a veniki treatment, where bundles of soaked oak leaves are used to tap and brush the skin. The oak leaves release a mild woody scent and are said to open the pores, making it one of the more memorable parts of a visit.
