Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, Almaty, Memorial park in central Almaty, Kazakhstan
The Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen is a green area in central Almaty with paths winding through oaks, elms, aspens, maples, poplars, pines and firs. The site covers 18 hectares and connects several streets in the surrounding neighborhood.
The site was created in 1870 as the Old Cemetery Park and received its current name in 1942 to honor 28 soldiers who defended Moscow during World War II. The grounds were then transformed into a public memorial space.
The Memorial of Glory contains granite obelisks displaying names of the Panfilov heroes and features an eternal flame in the center of the park.
The park sits between Kunayev, Gogol, Zenkov, and Kazybek Bi streets and offers several entrances throughout the day. The pathways are wide enough for walkers and families with children.
The Ascension Cathedral in the park survived a severe earthquake in 1911 and still serves as a place of worship today. The wooden building was constructed without nails.
