Жетысу

Zhetysu is a region in southeastern Kazakhstan that stretches from flat desert plains to snow-capped mountains near Almaty. The landscape changes constantly between open steppe areas, rocky plateaus, and mountains at various elevations.

The region served as a major hub for trade routes during ancient times, especially along the Silk Road, which connected East and West. Archaeological discoveries like the Issyk burial mound from the 3rd to 2nd century BC show the importance of early settlement here.

The name Zhetysu means "seven rivers" and refers to the waterways that flow through the landscape. You can see traces of ancient settlements scattered across the region, showing how people have lived here for thousands of years.

Visitors can explore various hiking trails from central Almaty, with organized tours offering transportation to the main natural attractions. It is wise to wear good shoes and bring plenty of water, especially when venturing into higher elevations for extended periods.

The Singing Barchan is a sand dune that produces deep sounds during strong winds while staying in the same location for thousands of years. This rare geological phenomenon occurs because of how sand grains move when wind blows across the dune.
