Central Mosque

The Central Mosque in Almaty is a modern religious building with white marble exterior walls and a prominent golden dome. The structure features multiple towers and spacious prayer halls designed to accommodate large numbers of worshippers.

This mosque was constructed in 1999 and stands on the site of an earlier mosque from 1890 that was destroyed decades earlier. The building represents the re-establishment of the religious community's place of worship following earlier disruptions.

The interior dome features hand-calligraphed Koranic verses that cover the upper walls. These inscriptions demonstrate how Islamic artistic traditions shape the visual experience inside the prayer halls.

Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and remove shoes before entering the prayer areas, with separate sections provided for different groups. The interior layout is spacious and easy to navigate, offering adequate areas for changing and preparing.

The mosque was featured on a commemorative coin issued by Kazakhstan's central bank, reflecting its architectural importance to the nation. This honor demonstrates how the building represents the country's identity as a modern state with Islamic heritage.
