Köbeytuz, Salt lake in Yereymentau District, Kazakhstan
Köbeytuz is a circular salt lake measuring approximately 2.9 kilometers long and 2.3 kilometers wide, situated at an elevation of 253 meters. The body of water sits in a relatively flat landscape with little surrounding development.
The name originates from two Kazakh words: 'kobei' meaning multiplication and 'tuz' meaning salt, reflecting how locals have understood the lake's nature for generations. This naming shows that people have long recognized the saline character of the water.
Local communities observe this lake as a marker of natural cycles, with its seasonal color shifts from blue to pink reflecting the rhythm of life in the Akmola region. People recognize these changes as part of the landscape's living character.
The lake sits about 160 kilometers from Astana and is accessible via the Astana-Pavlodar highway. Look for the Korzhynkul Stations sign at the 177-kilometer mark to locate the area.
The water occasionally turns pink due to Dunaliella salina algae, which produces carotenoid pigments under specific environmental conditions. This natural transformation occurs intermittently and creates an unusual sight in the landscape.
