Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport, International airport in Beirut, Lebanon
Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport is an international airport in Beirut, Lebanon. The facility comprises two main terminal buildings connected through a central area, spread across several levels.
The facility replaced the older Bir Hassan Airfield in 1954 and underwent several expansions over the following decades. During the Lebanese Civil War it suffered heavy damage and was gradually rebuilt after 1990.
The name honors the former prime minister who led the country's post-war reconstruction. In the waiting halls and at the gates, families greet arrivals with flowers while travelers stock up on sweets and spices from the stands for their journey home.
The airport lies roughly 9 km (about 5.6 miles) south of the city center and can be reached via several road links. Departure halls are located on the upper floor while arrival areas are arranged on the ground level.
After the end of hostilities, some old runways remained buried beneath the new taxiways. Pilots appreciate the facility for its proximity to the Mediterranean, which provides clear orientation during approaches from the west.
