Oluvil Lighthouse, Maritime beacon in Oluvil, Sri Lanka.
Oluvil Lighthouse is a white concrete tower of cylindrical shape standing on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, rising approximately 24 meters above ground with a viewing balcony and lantern chamber at the top. The beacon flashes white light at regular intervals to guide maritime traffic along this stretch of coastline.
The structure was built in the 1990s as part of the Oluvil Harbour development and represented one of the first lighthouses constructed after Sri Lanka gained independence. It marked the modernization of maritime infrastructure on this part of the coast.
The lighthouse serves as a familiar landmark for fishermen who depend on its beacon when setting out to sea from this port. Local communities have grown accustomed to its regular flashing light marking the rhythm of maritime life along this coast.
The lighthouse is located directly at the harbor and is easily accessible on foot from the town center, especially in the early morning when fishing boats are launching. The best time to visit is around sunset when the beacon becomes active and provides clear views of the surroundings.
The structure survived the 2004 tsunami with damage but underwent complete reconstruction afterward, becoming a symbol of the region's resilience. Visitors today can observe the reinforced construction methods that were implemented to withstand such natural disasters.
