Panemunė Castle

Panemunė Castle, Renaissance castle in Jurbarkas District, Lithuania.

Panemunė Castle is a Renaissance fortress in Jurbarkas District with four wings arranged around a central courtyard and corner towers that define its outline. The complex sits within a park featuring five terraced ponds that create visual depth and frame the surrounding landscape.

A Hungarian nobleman named János Eperjes commissioned construction between 1604 and 1610, bringing Dutch architect Peter Nonhaardt to design the complex. This collaboration merged architectural ideas from Central and Western Europe into the final structure.

The Vilnius Academy of Arts uses spaces within the castle walls to display art collections and host traditional craft events. Visitors can observe contemporary artistic work alongside demonstrations of regional handcraft techniques throughout the year.

Visitors can explore all restored sections of the castle and enjoy views from the towers looking out over the river valley below. The park's walking paths allow people to wander at their own pace and take in the surrounding landscape.

Renaissance-era wall paintings were discovered hidden within the castle walls during recent restoration work. These colored frescoes reveal artistic techniques from the original construction period that had been covered over time.
