Uostadvaris lighthouse

Uostadvaris lighthouse is a red brick octagonal structure standing 12 meters tall with a white lantern mounted on its gallery platform. The building sits at a strategic point in the delta where vessels once relied on its beam to navigate safely through the waters.

This lighthouse was built in 1876 near Rusnė Island to guide ships through the complex waters of the Nemunas Delta. Operations ceased in 1986 when modern navigation technology made the beam signal unnecessary.

The lighthouse reflects traditional Lithuanian maritime building methods, with its keeper's house design that once anchored daily life in the Nemunas Delta community. Visitors can observe how such structures were woven into the fabric of coastal work and settlement patterns.

The lighthouse sits in a wetland area within the Nemunas Delta Regional Park and is best reached from nearby Uostadvaris. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring weather protection, as the terrain can be damp and winds are often strong.

During its years of operation, the beam reached out to 12 nautical miles across the water, making it a vital reference point for sailors across the Baltic region. This range was exceptional for a tower of its modest size and showed how effective the lighting system was.
