Šilutė manor, Manor house in Šilutė, Lithuania.
Šilutė manor is a two-story residential building with a finished attic displaying late Classical and Historicist architecture, decorated with regional elements from the Klaipėda area. It has been converted into a museum that holds sixty thousand exhibits, library collections, and a restoration workshop all within its walls.
The estate was established in 1721 during Prussian administrative reforms and underwent major changes when Hugo Scheu acquired it in 1889. Scheu modernized the structure of the place and shaped its appearance for the coming decades.
The manor contains the first museum in the Klaipėda region, housing collections of ethnographic materials, furniture, clothing, documents, prints, and maps. These objects reveal how people in the area lived and worked in earlier times.
The place is easy to access and underwent major renovation in 2015, making all areas comfortable to explore for visitors. It is best to allow plenty of time to view the different collections and the restoration workshop.
Hugo Scheu created an English park and distributed land for public facilities such as hospitals, schools, and churches, which permanently changed the place. This generosity made him a key figure in the development of the local community.
