Amalvo Palios, Wetland ecosystem in Marijampolė Municipality, Lithuania
Amalvo Palios is a wetland complex in Marijampolė Municipality covering about 1439 hectares at roughly 91 meters above sea level. The river system of Dovinė divides the area into four sections with varied grass-like plants and contains Amalvo Lake in its northeastern section.
In the post-glacial period, three lakes existed in the Dovinė basin before the area gradually transformed over millennia into an extensive peat formation of about 4000 hectares. This geological change created the wetland landscape visible today.
The place holds traces of past settlements, including ancient burial mounds and the village of Amalviškiai with its old cemetery. These remains show how communities adapted to life in this wetland over time.
Visitors should prepare for different conditions in the four sections separated by the Dovinė river, as each area has distinct features. Waterproof footwear and moisture-resistant clothing are advisable when exploring this wetland terrain.
The Panausupio peninsula creates a natural division of the wetland into two distinct parts, each with its own characteristics. This geological feature makes the area worth visiting to see how neighboring marsh sections differ from each other.
