Novaraistis Ornithological Reserve, Protected bird sanctuary in Kaunas District, Lithuania
The Novaraistis Ornithological Reserve covers about 800 hectares across three municipalities and contains mixed woodlands, forests, raised bogs, rivers, and streams that create different habitats. The area was transformed into a research and observation site where scientists study bird populations and movement patterns.
The land was originally a peat extraction site during the 1960s and was later reshaped into a bird habitat when the Novos stream was blocked. The designation as a protected reserve in 1988 recognized this transformed wetland as a crucial stopover for migratory birds.
The reserve is an important place for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts who can observe thousands of migratory birds throughout the seasons. Visitors come here to experience nature directly and learn about the birds that depend on this habitat.
The reserve has an observation tower with parking available and visitors can get more information at the Lekėčiai Forestry Information Center. The best time to visit is during spring and autumn when migratory birds are passing through the area.
Each autumn thousands of cranes gather here during their migration journey to gather strength for the rest of their flight across Europe and Africa. This massive congregation turns the area into a rare natural spectacle that few places in Europe can match.
