Kaunas District Municipality

Kaunas District Municipality is an administrative region in central Lithuania surrounding the city of Kaunas with various smaller settlements scattered throughout. The area includes multiple villages and townships connected by rural roads and agricultural land.

The district was reorganized into its current administrative form after World War II during the Soviet period. The area had been inhabited for centuries, with medieval settlements leaving traces that can still be seen today.

The district preserves Lithuanian heritage through 19 historic manors, the ethnography museum in Babtai, and traditional craft exhibitions in Vilkija's cultural center.

The district is expansive and requires a car or public transport to move between the various villages and communities scattered across the region. Roads are generally passable, though services are more limited than in the city center.

The district contains several medieval hill-forts scattered across the landscape, telling of early Baltic settlements and defenses. These earthen mounds remain visible features in the rural terrain, showing how the land was historically fortified.
