Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological Museum, Natural history museum in Kaunas, Lithuania
The Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological Museum is a natural history museum on Laisvės Avenue in central Kaunas, displaying mounted animals, skeletons, insect collections, and anatomical specimens. The exhibits are arranged across several rooms and cover both local Lithuanian fauna and species from other continents.
The museum was founded in 1919 when Professor Tadas Ivanauskas transferred his personal zoological collection from Lebiodka manor to Kaunas. It grew steadily over the following decades and became one of the oldest natural history institutions in the Baltic region.
The museum is named after Tadas Ivanauskas, a Lithuanian naturalist who spent his life studying local wildlife. School groups visit regularly, and for many people in Kaunas, the mounted animals here are part of childhood memories.
The museum sits on Laisvės Avenue in central Kaunas and is easy to reach on foot from most of the city center. Allow around two hours to walk through all the rooms without rushing.
This is the only zoological museum in the three Baltic states. Part of the collection comes from hunting trophies donated by private collectors in the 19th and early 20th centuries, which gives the displays an additional layer of history beyond natural science.
